How we read it: "Not published" means the hotel or operator gives no hours on a page we could open. Transcorp Hilton lists a casino on its own Hilton page, Federal Palace is marketed as a hotel with a casino, and Jacaranda sits in the Sheraton hotel in Abuja. Directory counts of machines and tables disagree from one source to the next, so we left them out.

We did not list Port Harcourt, Uyo or Calabar. Directories mention a few hotel casinos in Port Harcourt, but none had a recent, reliable confirmation, and Uyo and Calabar gave us nothing at all. If you know one that is open, call before you travel and do not rely on an old listing.

   You need to be 18 or over, and staff may ask for a passport, driver's licence or national ID card. A photocopy or a phone photo is often not accepted. Do not argue at the door; ask what document they do accept and return with it.

   Hotels usually expect tidy, smart clothing, and slippers or sportswear can be turned back. None of the six publishes a dress code we could read, so ask when you phone and dress one step above what you think is needed.

   Cash or chips confusion

   Before you hand money over, ask how you buy chips, whether cards are taken and how winnings are paid out. Get the answer on the spot and keep any receipt. Large sums attract extra identity checks, so do not carry more cash than you plan to use.

   Switch to the lobby
